Impressions on Trivan’s “Crowned with Dread and Power”

Trivan have recently released their most recent song “Crowned with Dread and Power” as a statement of authority, discipline and uncompromising vision. “Trivan is a place of reckoning. No vow is made to society, religion, or ideology. The only vow is made to one’s own truth.”  – that’s what first caught our eye from the band’s website.

With clear moral principles that parallel LaVeyan Satanism’s Eleven Rules of Earth, Trivan is far more than a band – it is a circle bounded by deep rooted philosophy with the goal of the TRIvial to VANquish.

“Crowned with Dread and Power”  is also a conceptual continuation of “Abyss of Crawling Shadows” that reinforces those principles and will be part of their new album Eternal Shore – set to release in early 2027, so make sure to keep an eye on their profiles.

Tempestuous. Mysterious. Hypnotic.

That’s how Trivan’s latest song first sounded to us when they first sent it in.

The song begins with a traditional heavy/death metal riff choice and powerful drum fill interventions that create a suspenseful intro which lands heavy on the listener as a preparation for the upcoming storm.

The atmosphere then develops into a fast and hypnotic riff that takes over and opens the path for the shrieking vocals to set in.

All this is accompanied by the intense imagery of Arts of The Unspeakable that depicts demons and inverted crosses not merely for shock value but as symbols that contradict blind (religious-like) obedience.

Rather than following one narrow subgenre, the song sticks to a black metal core but manages to seamlessly experiment with adjacent subgenres.

At about 180 bpm the band’s technical prowess is undeniable: the precise and prolonged 8th note triplet and 16th note blast beats prove the uncompromising effort that was required to achieve the proper level of stamina.

The guitars’ variety couldn’t go unnoticed either: plenty of riffs and the unusual occurrence of a fast and rich hypnotic solo are noteworthy mentions. Thus, once again, Trivan do not limit themselves to one particular genre and focus on all aspects of music rather than raw atmosphere as black metal usually does.

However, lyrics are where “Crowned with Dread and Power” really shines.

Trivan do not worship darkness – they make most of its metaphors and use it as their messenger to help one reveal wisdom amidst the quiet of the shadows.

Trivan – “Crowned with Dread and Power”

As the night bleeds into my veins,
the Serpent rises, cloaked in shadows.
Whispering in the tongue of Hell,
every weakness you fed now takes its shape,
and it will not let you go.
Interpretation

The first verse introduces the central idea of the song with the serpent as the biblical symbol of forbidden knowledge that one was actively discouraged to seek, ignoring its whispers. Apart from that, the snake can mean transformation and renewal despite shedding its skin on the surface, deeper knowledge remains intact. Furthermore, one’s weaknesses are presented to be the beginning of one’s self-discovery as a reiteration of one of the Trivanist core principles about self-awareness.

Under the spiral of death, in the flames of the night,
I rush toward the hidden truth.
The moon and stars, silent witnesses to my descent,
guide me deeper into the abyss.
The Serpent laughs as poison sweetens my tongue,
baptized in fire, my spirit cleansed with demon blood.
My soul now a hymn for the fallen, forgotten gods,
as the black fairies within me begin to whisper.
Burn, heavens, let the temples crumble.
Interpretation

The following verses then detail the hyperbolized hardships one has to endure to find both deepest outer and inner (“spiral of death […] hidden truth”) truths. In the process “temples”, as the symbol of the strongly held baseless dogma, projected at grand scale. starts to shake and crumble seemingly for others too.

Let the hollow world vanish like smoke in the wind.
From the ashes I rise, a child of darkness and truth,
prepared to crush the feeble lights of the world.
Now in Trivan, my eternal dominion,
where shadows move with the breath of nightmares.
Born of darkness, I reign in shadows.
Let the stars perish, for in darkness I thrive.
Hell's sigils blaze as sanity shatters and fades.
Demons whisper ancient blasphemies, foretelling endless ruin.
Interpretation

The next part details how knowledge wreaks havoc within the hollow world of superficiality that will “vanish like smoke” because of its dogma held like religious beliefs. Thus, with a phoenix-like rebirth from ashes, the nightmares are unleashed upon the veil of ignorance. The blasphemies from this section underline the most apparent opposition between the metaphor of darkness as knowledge and religion or “light” as ignorance.

Scars carved by the night itself, black venom in my veins,
chanting the forbidden names that swallow all light.
Renounce the false gods, embrace the infernal flames.
Invert their crosses, let darkness proclaim thy name.
Interpretation

The next section now calls others toward blasphemy and to quit their obedience to the false gods of ignorance or “light” and rather choose the path of truth.

Amid spirals of torment, surrounded by demonic fire,
I walked through the abyss and returned with my demons in chains.
Demonic legions roar in the dark
as worlds collapse beneath the eye of eternal night.
From Hellfire's embrace I rise, crowned with dread and power,
where inverted crosses stand as pillars of a new dawn.

The conclusion of the song is actually the key to decipher it, as it ends with a sudden, unexpected turnaround, where one’s demons are chained and the entire dark imagery seems to change its meaning and thus becomes a crown for one’s own triumph – a proof that Trivan do not worship darkness but tame it.

To decipher the song, (one’s own) demons do not signify opposing forces to ignorance but the “usual” meaning. However, having them confronted and understood results in control over them instead of the denial and self-deception induced by dogma. The demons’ acknowledgement essentially means that they are part of each one of us but they no longer rule us unknowingly.

The outcome of the story hints to a place to rebuild (a new dawn) on the remains from a destruction that purged what was once the ignorance within.
