Pridian – throwback to the brutal precision of ESNS 2026

Robert-Valentin Bencze

Parteneri

Pridian’s echoes still resonate since their performance in February 2026 at ESNS and the destruction they brought still lingers in the air. Pridian is a modern metal band from Estonia and amongst the first of its kind to set this record and play at ESNS (click here if you don’t know what ESNS is). Pridian is the first (modern) metal band from their country to play at Eurosonic Festival and to also be booked as a consequence (or at least that’s what the official ESNS numbers are saying from 2023 onwards). That’s the emotional power and brutal precision Pridian delivered at Mutua Fides on the night of January 15th in Groningen.

Power, emotion and precision.

What I first noticed is their on-stage professionalism and dedication, as the estonian lads presented themselves with visible stage discipline and a solid live destruction infrastructure.

Their custom rack setups entailed various pedalboards, triggers and essentially the entire digital arsenal enabled both pristine, replicable fast-setup sound. This proved their dedication for impeccable live delivery, along with the personalized wi-fi network to support their surgical synchronization to the backing track with extremely varied electronic, sometimes D’n’B, mostly electro synths and other elements along with trace amounts of pop.

Technical prowess and alien accuracy

Modern. Brutal. Emotional. That’s another way I would summarize their sound. The first stylistic impression upon hearing Pridian’s initial notes was: modern metal with an alien vibe to it. And rightfully so, as their complete musicianship was showcased by both the heavy and soft parts alike. The heavy guitar parts were accompanied by punchy, yet tasteful grooves with lots of ghost notes (e.n. softer hits) and the riffs felt both weightly as well as engaging and energizing.

Pridian definitely know how to both soothe and punch

Their frequent but not excessive alternances between brutal and soft parts kept people’s attention hooked and showcased songs that breathe thanks to the mature compositional architecture.

The calm part from DINY was a (short) breath of fresh air because it was actually the quiet before a huge storm that came with its breakdown. Their disco-deathcore intro from Void Resonance along with their breakdowns have definitely animated the audience.

Pridian’s drummer even went open handed (e.n. fancy wording for not crossing arms, which translates to ambidexterity or changing the leading hand) for one of their songs, which entails a level of confort and coordination displayed by well versed players.

The lyrics of Pridian that most spoke to me revolve around self-reflection and the inner journey of knowing oneself – best example is Void Resonance where the echoing questions of “When will the Image resolve?” and “When will we find our souls?” clearly resound through the inner shadows.

However, there is another song that brought forth memories of something even closer to myself, with lyrics that hint about some topics shared with the words I wrote for some past songs. Baseless beliefs, religious-like delusion and lack of critical thinking as well as the ephemerity of religion and (external or artificial) structures of power and the ideas that accompany them. All these remind us just how much we (and our idols alike) are Predestined to Change.

Pridian – idoldust

Pyroclastic flow.
This is a gift from your gods.
Asphyxiate.
No head will turn.
Praying hands forever bound,
As the structures of wisdom dissolve.

Interpretation

The pyroclastic flow and asphyxiation hint suggestive image that look like the death of Pompeii.

The asphyxiation can also hint to a more subtle, physiological effect of fear and the sensory illusion of not enough air.

The praying hands and no turned heads can indicate a cold shoulder from an external source of power and thus suggest that true help solely comes from within, while the gods can be seen as a broader interpretation of baseless beliefs beyond religion but rather rooted in obedience.

No head will turn.

Interpretation

An alternative interpretation of “No head will turn” can also be taken as faint indication that can hint at the same time both:

a) the religious-like ignorance that denies other perspectives, essentially keeping a locked “unturned” perspective

as well as

b) the historically recurring pattern of ignorant cultural (systemic) norms that have gone obsolete from time and time again and are now laughable for the generations to come and would no longer turn to them

Hope for the sacred stone
To liquefy once more.
When will you learn?
There is no heaven where the temples burn.(x2)

Interpretation

The human tendency to live with a false hope for the repetition of an alleged miracle is another way to reinforce the appeal to an external power; The once supposed liquefiation of stone is thus the miracle awaited for.

“When will you learn” can be related to the realization of one’s own power or worth. Or another way to frame it can also be tied to the former idea from “No head will turn” but slightly hints more of the buried obsolete norms, rather than a rethorical question about an improbable outcome for ignorant people trapped in their own learned helplessness.

The image is mirrored in what you create,
The light that you seek is the power within. (x2)

Interpretation

The mirrored image seems like a direct reference to the abrahamic principle of people having been “made in god’s image” and also points to the obvious question of “man makes god or god makes man?” from my former lyrics, where god can mean any dogmatic belief or external source of precieved power.

Remember,
Bow to none.
Be the glitch in the system.
The damage is done.

Pyroclastic flow.
This is a gift from your gods.
Asphyxiate.
No head will turn.

Hope for the sacred stone
To liquefy once more.
When will you learn?
There is no heaven where the temples burn.

Be the glitch in the system,
Bow to none.
The damage is done.
There is no heaven where the temples burn.

Interpretation

The final lyrics are both a question and a direct call for people to be a glitch in the (social) syatem/fabric. The question stems from the uncertainty of when will the call be obeyed (if ever). That is because everything comes in a context where the natural tendency is to glorify external factors, precieved power and dogmatic beliefs, while also downplaying personal accountability.

What is certain is that showing defiance towards a dysfunctional belief system is ultimately a necessary condition for integrity and the realization of one’s own real worth as the band also states

‘Idoldust’ is about the human tendency to glorify external symbols of power, without realizing that the monuments and figures are mere reflections of their creators, and that true strength is found within each individual.

Pridian – of past or future?

Pridian is definitely an oxymoron in every sense possible. Both musically and by name: despite the meaning behind their name itself, which is the latin „relating to yesterday”, their musical soundscape is definitely not something „of yesterday” but rather a glimpse of the future right now. I am certainly eager to see more of them soon.
